FAQ
Where are we?
You are on Borealis-6, a newly operational space station sent out to an area that has seen an increase in traffic over the last few years. Acting as a mid-point, Borealis-6 offers all ships a chance to refuel, take a break, or even do business. Borealis has just about anything anyone would ever need and even some extra space just in case there's something they forgot. The full breakdown of the station can be found on the setting page.
Thanks to the replicators, just about everything is free on Borealis-6, businesses are open because they want to be, so please be nice to the clerks! The replicators are small, they can only make food and smaller items; It can't make whole clothes, but it can make fabric and thread, that's why there's a clothing store. Similarly, larger items that aren't offered by the station will not be attainable.
Unless, of course, a merchant who stops at Borealis has something of interest and is willing to do business with you. This, however, is not free and is where credits will come in.
What are 'credits?'
Credits are the currency system in this universe. All 'Displaced' will be given a card (not unlike a debit card) upon their arrival which will hold and transfer credits as needed.
Everyone who works has a small allowance given to them for their troubles, but the only people who receive any sort of substantial amount are the members of the crew.
Is someone going to clue my character in when they show up?
Of course! As soon as they arrive, there will be two people behind a console that will welcome them and set them up. A bit of registration (In which your character will be asked their name and 'sanitized') later and they'll be given a Comm Unit, a Key Card for their quarters, a holographic map, an identification bracelet, and a spending card for their Credits.
They'll be told, briefly, about the ship (It's name, who the commander is), instructed on how to use the comm unit if they've never seen one before, and sent off with a friendly 'Please make yourselves at home.'
Why is my character here?
Funny thing about technology: It never seems to work the way you want it to. Barely two months after the new transporters were put in, the first two 'Displaced' suddenly beamed aboard. (Much to the utter surprise of the poor crew members on duty.) A quick search later showed that the machine seemed to be fine, but the power levels were off the scale. With no immediate fix available, Commander Owens made preparations to accommodate any sudden visitors.
Engineers and mechanics are working to try and find a way to control, if not limit, the power levels, but until then....no one really knows!
What can my character do here?
Well, it's slice of life, that means 'just about anything they want.' There will be occasional mod-run, plots and progress on the meta-plot. Player-run plots are fully encouraged so long as larger-scale ones are cleared with the mods first.
Basically: run around, gain CR, make a life for yourself, utilize all Borealis has to offer, and get cozy. There's also an option on the suggestions page for plot ideas that players are encouraged to use if they come up with something; this is your game too, we want your help making it fun!
My character's a competent engineer/doctor/counselor/wants to help with security, can they? Not right now. Commander Owens still isn't entirely certain what to do with these 'Displaced' nor does she feel comfortable putting the station in the hands of untrained 'civilians.'
Give Owens some time, though, once she's certain nothing dire will happen, there will be options for your character, no matter what their specialty!
✯Those already competent in their field who wish to join the various different crews will be offered a test to make sure you're worth your salt. (Handwaved, simply use the job application page to make it official)
✯Those who don't know these skills already or just don't quite know enough will have the chance to receive training in their chosen field and gain authorization that way.
✯Those who are looking for a bit of adventure may sign up to receive 'Away Training' so they may be apart of an Away Team. These Away Teams will be sent on missions that need tending to in the area. Sometimes things come up and there are no other ships in the area, that's where the station's Away Teams come in.
What's with this 'Comm Unit?'
The Comm Unit is a handheld device that allows you to access the communications and archive sections open to those living on Borealis. This way, you can get a hold of someone or send them a message without needing to seek them out. You can also use it to leave an open transmission that others may choose to listen and respond to.
These Comm Units are not meant to be full computers, they only hold the information programmed into them and have a few functions (such as games, a limited number of books, a notepad function, and a sketchpad function.) If your character wants to access the full archive and any transmissions that happened before their arrival, they'll need to go to the public access Comm Stations.
What's the deal with the NPCs?
The Key staff portrayed in the 'borealis_npc' account are, currently, off limits for godmodding. Some of them will make announcements and all will be available to interact with, but some of them will be mostly through request. If you want your character to interact with a specific NPC, just ping a mod. These NPCs are here for information and announcement purposes (and because we need someone to keep the station afloat) if you don't want to play with them, don't have to. All the other NPCs/crew members on board are there for your godmodding enjoyment.
Who am I allowed to app?
Currently, any character with sufficient canon, whether it be book, video game, webcomic, movie, etc, can be applied for. Canon AUs are allowed (such as Final Fantasy vs. Kingdom Hearts, Star Trek: TOS vs. Star Trek 2009, Canon!Supernatural vs. 2014!Supernatural, etc.). Additionally, apping an older or younger version of a character that is already in game won't be allowed unless they're an AU.
At a later date, OCs and AUs of a player's making will be allowed, however, these will be judged more critically as it is the only 'source' we will have. Additionally, out of AUs, Canon AUs, and Canon altogether, only two incarnations of a character will be allowed at a time.
What about my character's powers?
They'll have them! This is a sci-fi game, not a fantasy game, there's no mechanic that will cap their powers. However, please keep in mind that they are in space, if they want to rip a hole in the side of the station, they'll be getting sucked out, suffocated, and frozen to death along with everyone else. Besides, Borealis has a prompt security detail, if someone is proven to hold 'ill intentions' they'll find themselves in a holding cell before long.
There are two limitations of note and that is on teleporting powers and mind-control/Psychic powers. While a character can teleport anywhere they want in the station, they will not be able to teleport out of it. There is an in-game reason for this, so please keep it in mind.
For the mind control and psychic powers, both will need permission from other players, and there are Special Rules for NPCs. The nanomachines in the Officer's systems are more high tech than those they stuck in the citizen's systems, and their machines make mind control and mind reading impossible. The non-officer crew members, however, will be accessible to a degree, just contact a mod if you want to know what your character would learn.
Nonhuman characters, what's going to happen with them?
Nothing untoward! All non-humans will be just that upon arrival. All non-humans will be able to find their dietary needs met by the replicators, so there's no need to fret over your vampires being locked up for attacking people.
What about languages?
All new arrivals will receive a shot as part of their 'disinfection' that holds nanomachines that will translate all the languages to one they'll understand. For visual things, your Comm Units will have many language options, but anything non-electronic may need the help of a translator. Who knows, this may be your chance to pick up that second language you always wanted to learn!
What if my character is injured or dying?
We'll have to draw a line here! Sorry, 'post-death' will not be a viable canon point on your apps, however you can bring your character in mostly dead. While it's certainly not easy to clean up any blood spills on the transporter pad, no one will blame you for your grievous injuries.
Upon arrival, an injured character will be rushed to the Medical Wing where Borealis' excellent medical staff will tend to them. Depending on the injury, your character may find themselves confined to the Medical Bay for a bit, but don't worry, they'll be on their feet soon enough, even if they came in only sort of alive!
How many characters can I reserve/App?
Only 2 for each. If you app two characters and one of them doesn't get in, another app will not be accepted from you until the next app round.
What can my character bring with them?
Anything on them at the time! Small things nearby can also come through as well as small pets but, sorry, we'll have to say 'no' to any T.A.R.D.I.S.'s, Impalas, or Arwings. However! There may be chances for your character to get these items back in the future, depending on Plotty Things.
Where's my character going to stay?
Luckily, there's an entire habitation block for quarters and only a small amount of it is currently in use. This is where everyone will be staying. There are single-person rooms that everyone will be assigned to and two-person rooms that a couple may request.
'Displaced' who become crew members (who are not officers) will live in a shared room with one other person, as is standard.
How does posting work?
✯All Comm Unit posts go to
borealis_network. This is where all your standard video/voice/text posts go. Action is completely acceptable in this community so long as the post itself was video, voice, or text.
✯All strictly in-person interactions go in the logs comm:
borealis_logs. We ask that you use the template in the comm's profile to start all of your logs so that everyone will have an idea about what's going on.
✯ The comm
borealis_offcomm is there for all of your OOC needs. Announcements, intros, plotting, etc.
✯Last, there is the game's crack comm,
boar_cialis. This is where memes of all shapes, sizes, and flavors go. Crack memes, heart memes, plotting or CR memes, everything.
What about canon updates, hiatuses, and drops?
✯ Canon updates are allowed! When you choose to update your character, they'll collapse no matter where they are, and won't wake up for 3-5, based on player discretion. When your character collapses, they will be taken to a cryo-bed and hooked up to machines that will stimulate the body and brain; this is how the changes happen. The update happens mentally, but any physical changes that they will also be coming back with will occur while in the bed.
When they wake up, a nurse will give them a check up to make sure they're all right (or heal any wounds they might have 'come back' with and let them go on their way.
✯ You have two options for hiatuses: one will be handled much in the way canon updates are. Your character will collapse, be sent to the Med Wing, and hooked up to a cyro-bed for as long as your hiatus lasts. The difference is they will have a restful, but dreamless sleep, and feel refreshed upon waking up. The other is simply to put your character on autopilot.
✯Drops OOCly are no different than any other game. ICly, the character will simply 'beam out' as though being transported somewhere else entirely. No one can understand why or where they go, especially since they weren't on transporter pads at the time. They can only hope their friends landed somewhere safe...
What's the death policy here?
So, those nanomachines that translate for you and cause the physical changes in a canon update? They can also be utilized to bring someone back from death. It's a long process, and it's likely your character would be out of commission for up to a week, potentially two depending on the manner of death and how much reconstruction needed to be done, but aren't you glad you had that shot?
Your character will not come back from death unscathed, however. In addition to whatever mental damage the event caused, your character will also wake up..a little different. The head doctor likes to 'experiment' and for a month your character will have to live with whatever he chose to do.
What the change is is up to you: a horn on their forehead, and extra limb or digit, loss of a sense, suddenly seeing or even hearing colors. The sky is almost the limit; we'll trust you'll be reasonable and not make them half dragon or something. Regardless of the change, it will only last a month and then fade away/fall off; all good things must come to an end, after all.
What is your 18+/NSFW policy? Can we smut?
Smut away! Sometimes, that's where relationships (or even random threads) go, and we understand that it can be fun to play those things out. All we ask is that you comm-lock any logs intended for smut and put a cut warning on any logs that have smut in them, intended or not.
If a Network post turns into action which turns into smut, it's hard to 'hide away' an individual thread, so we just ask that you make a new log for it and put a note that it's just a continuation. (If you want to leave an OOC note in the thread itself saying as much as well, go for it, that's up to you and how you organize.)
